The downloadable PDF is outstanding; you provide a framework that makes it a lot easier to organize one’s thoughts and elements of the “bio as a story.”

The problem is that now, when I see an ordinary bio, I’m having a harder time taking in that info. But that’s what bio’s are like for the majority of the world!

So thanks for creating this “problem” for me. :-)

Yes, this is exactly my purpose – to share the struggles I’ve moved through in a way that others can learn in mind/body/spirit without having to go that distance.

Thanks for sharing Vicki. You nailed it – tell people about the journey you’ve been, and show that you have something to share about it. You’ve figured out things the hard way, and don’t want others to struggle in the same way.

Mike, your suggestions on how to write a bio were very helpful. I just rewrote mine for an upcoming standup comedy show here in NYC:
Jonesy takes great pleasure in using his jokecrafting to shed light on our cultural mishaps. The follies of the health care system and jury duty are just a couple of the issues he routinely wraps in clever observational comedy to the delight of audiences nationwide. As an actor Jonesy has been seen on Letterman, Law and Order, Mtv, Nickelodeon and Vh1.
I took your advice and put the credits at the end of it, I kept it short, and I tried to give the audience an idea of what it is I WANT to do, what I am trying to accomplish with my act.
Thanks again, this was invaluable advice.
    Jonesy

Dang, Jonesy! Thrilled to see you put all these ideas into practice. I’m surprised your guitar slanging performancing didn’t make it into the mix. Definitely a unique and most loveable part of your online persona. I always look forward to your video-recorded guitar-infused poetic comedy. Can I get a witness?

I haven’t been able to get the email invitation back yet for tomorrow’s webinar. Help, please.

And I had a thought to share. One way to think of this bio piece is to write it as if it were your own obituary! I just attended a memorial service yesterday for a dear friend who succumbed to cancer at 49. Several people shared thoughts with a crowd of about 400 people at the country club where he was the beloved restaurant manager. He was also the most amazing guitarist I will ever meet and call a friend. His love for music and performing for any size group was a thread that ran through everyone’s comments. Yes, he was the loved manager of one of San Jose’ best dining spots, but it was his passion for music that touched everyone, too!

I like your pointing out that each of us has something that moves us and has captured our imaginations. Sometimes it takes digging to find it! But that journey is the privilege of kings and the treasure is worth every effort. Not to make the effort is to simply exist.

If you can teach me some tools to distill that kind of passion down into a 50 word bio, that is worth giving you my attention!

    Thanks!

Hi David! Thanks for your comment. Check your inbox for email confirmation with webinar details. Will email you to separately to confirm you got the details. Really appreciate your touching example of your friend’s living a life worth telling. The 7-step bio template can be used to create a 100-250 word bio. Once you get to that place, you can easily edit it down to 50 word version. Our course goes into much greater depth with lots of real bio examples.

    I align completely with this.

Your own natural authority. I like it.

You make a good point in clearly explaining that there needs to be a balance between validation (considering we are a proof conscious culture) and the sharing of what really stimulates your drive.

    Awesome video, man.

    Hi MM,

What an IMPORTANT question! “Am I writing from the EGO or in service to my audience….”

This question is hitting the nail on the head for me! I am so not interested to share what I have done and learned and achieved. I have done it in my infos and abouts, but I clinch every time I do it. Why? Because I am in transition to define myself. I AM NOT what I have learned. I am NOT a PR Specialist, nor a Hakomi Therapist, or an Aura Soma Therapist. I am NOT a KaHuna Facilitator, nor a Constellator. All that I AM is a Facilitator to Self Discovery and AWARENESS – yet, I am not clear on how to put the tools together in my own authentic way of service. That is why I struggle so much with writing the BIO. I am sitting with my gifts, I am opening to possibilities, writing course materials and starting a group. I am doing course corrections and checking in with my Ego STUFF to really be in RESONANCE and not falling into the trap of getting EGO recognition…

Writing a BIO seems so much on the same frequency as wanting recognition. All I want is to get a clear message out, so people know about me… yet, I am stuck in the dilemma I mentioned above..

I chose to work with you, as you are one of my tribe. Aware of inner work, and the truth. Thank you for ongoingly inspiring me… I know I will get it. It is brewing inside me… YET – There is a blindspot I don’t see!!!

    Best, Bettina

Bettina – here’s another way of thinking about the bio story process. It’s about creating “vibrational credibility” at my new friend Kristen White taught me. Clarity, confidence, and alignment with your own core truth that allows you not only state but embody your story.

So, some feedback: I’m not sure that a “facilitator of discovery and awareness” is you I AM, as you state. To me, it sounds like another label like the others you’ve listed, except this one is more abstract and process oriented. Not to say that any of those labels are bad, those are all valid and valuable influences in your life.

We each have a blueprint and within it are core gifts, strengths, and a perspective for how we process and see the world. You’re still learning to name that perspective. From what I know you are in a momentus transition right now, so part of your reinvention is reclaiming the parts of yourself that perhaps didn’t have room or permission to exist in the former status quo of your life. Can you dig what I’m saying? ;-)

Thanks Michael! You have put succinctly what I think when I read a bio. How awesome to consider that our story and our goals for others has way more impact than listing worldly applause. Getting to the core and relating to others is how we serve. Getting them to consider how our story and theirs relates is what changes people’s lives. As someone who is just creating my own bio, this structure that you have suggested is awesome. Fab!

You go with your bad self Glenda! So glad this approach and structure is helpful. I hope it can offer a liberating path for so many of us with a bigger story to tell.

Thank you. As a full time storyteller, I’m frequently asked for a bio — to be printed in the program, to help create a press release, to give the client’s money people a better idea what they’re spending their money on. It’s a lot of work writing a readable, informative 50-word, 100-word bio, but when you think of it in terms of a short-short story, it swims into focus more readily than figuring out how to pick and choose which “good parts version” of your resume is called for in each instance. I’ve wondered, though, if maybe I’m stepping out of line whenever I send out a bio in my own voice, as opposed to “just the facts.”

Thanks Megan! Love your perspective. It’s important to remember that people hire you for your voice, personality, and point of view. Imagine if people could get a feel for who you are after just reading 50-150 words? Character trumps credentials
